Can one-year-olds get their ears pierced?

Can I Schedule an Ear Piercing Appointment for a One-Year-Old Child?

Unfortunately, no. At Easy Waxing salons, we perform ear piercings for children starting from the age of 4. This decision is based on considerations of safety, comfort, and the proper physical and psychological development of the child. Several important factors influence the choice of this age limit.

Why Don’t We Perform Ear Piercings for Very Young Children?

  1. Child Development and Safety
At the age of one, a child’s ear lobes may not yet be fully developed, and the skin and tissues are very delicate. Piercing at such a young age can lead to complications, such as:
    • Improper wound healing,
    • Risk of infection, as young children frequently touch their ears with dirty hands, making it difficult to maintain proper hygiene,
    • Shifting of piercings during growth, which may result in uneven placement of the earrings.
  2. Psychological Comfort
Children around the age of 4 are more aware and can better cooperate during the procedure. They can understand what is happening and be prepared for a brief moment of discomfort. In contrast, younger children may experience significant stress and fear, making it difficult to perform the procedure safely and smoothly.
  3. Post-Procedure Care
Proper aftercare is essential to prevent infections and promote healing. Older children are better able to follow aftercare instructions, such as avoiding touching their ears with dirty hands or applying antiseptic solutions regularly.

How to Prepare an Older Child for the Ear Piercing Procedure

  1. Talk to the Child
It’s important to explain to the child what the procedure involves, what will happen, and that they may feel a brief discomfort. Emphasize that the end result—having earrings—will be a rewarding experience.
  2. Choose the Right Earrings
It is recommended to use earrings made from hypoallergenic materials, such as medical-grade titanium or nickel-free plastic, to minimize the risk of allergies and irritation.
  3. Ensure Comfort
Children often handle the procedure better when both ears are pierced simultaneously. You may want to ask the salon if they offer this option.

Post-Procedure Care Recommendations

After the procedure, clean the pierced area daily with an antiseptic solution or saline. Avoid exposing the pierced ears to pool water and ensure that the child does not touch their ears with dirty hands. The earrings should not be removed for several weeks to allow the wounds to heal properly.

At Easy Waxing salons, we perform ear piercings for children from the age of 4. This age allows us to ensure the safety of the procedure, reduce the risk of complications, and make it easier to follow proper aftercare and healing. Piercing older children’s ears is generally more comfortable for both the child and their parents.
