Is spray tanning safe during pregnancy?
Spray tanning is generally considered one of the gentler ways to get a tan during pregnancy: it involves no UV exposure, and the solution only works on the upper layers of the epidermis. Every pregnancy is different, though, so please check with your doctor before booking and let your beauty therapist know that you are pregnant.
Why spray tanning is gentler than sunbathing
At Easy Waxing we use Fake Bake products – we are an authorised Fake Bake spray tanning partner. The colour comes from DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a sugar derivative rather than a dye. It reacts with amino acids on the surface of the skin and gives it a natural, bronzed look. DHA is approved for use in cosmetics in the European Union.
- No UVA/UVB radiation – no risk of sunburn as with sunbathing or sunbeds.
- The solution does not penetrate deeper than the upper layers of the epidermis and fades as they naturally shed.
- It consists mainly of distilled water and DHA, with no alcohol, perfume or artificial colorants.
What to keep in mind when you are pregnant
During pregnancy your skin may behave differently than usual – it can be more sensitive, and hormonal changes affect pigmentation. As a result, your tan may look slightly different from what you are used to. A few practical tips:
- ask your doctor whether there are any contraindications in your case;
- tell your therapist about your pregnancy – she will help you choose a lighter or deeper solution for your skin;
- try not to inhale the mist during application and protect your eyes and mouth;
- if you feel unwell or are particularly sensitive to smells, it is better to reschedule;
- the treatment is not suitable for broken skin or wounds, fresh scars, or persistent excessive sweating.
How to prepare and look after your tan
The rules are the same as for every client. Shave or wax at least 2 days before tanning and exfoliate beforehand. Skip creams, oils, perfume and make-up on the day, and wear dark, loose-fitting clothes. Avoid baths, showers and anything that makes you sweat for 8–10 hours after the treatment, then rinse off the solution and moisturise regularly – the tan usually lasts about 7–12 days and fades evenly.
