Essentials before first laser depilation

The first laser hair removal treatment may raise many questions and doubts, which is why proper preparation is essential. Before beginning a series of treatments, it is recommended to consult an experienced specialist. The consultation helps assess your skin type, hair type, and any possible contraindications to ensure the procedure is both safe and effective.

1. Scheduling a consultation

A free consultation is the first step in the laser hair removal process. During this visit, the specialist conducts a detailed interview and fills out a consultation form that includes information about your health, skin type, and hair characteristics.

During the consultation, the following will be discussed:

  • Expected results – How many sessions may be needed to achieve smooth skin.
  • Contraindications – The specialist will identify any factors that might prevent you from undergoing the procedure (e.g., pregnancy, certain skin conditions, use of photosensitizing medications).
  • Laser parameters – Depending on your skin phototype and hair color, the specialist will select appropriate laser settings tailored to your needs.

2. Patch test

Before the first full treatment, a patch test is performed. This test assesses the skin’s reaction to the laser and helps adjust the appropriate treatment parameters. The patch test should be conducted at least 24 hours before the actual procedure.

3. Preparation for the patch test and treatment

Shaving the treatment area
Two days before the planned patch test, you should thoroughly shave the area of skin to be treated. It is important to use a razor and not a depilator, wax, or sugar paste, as the hair follicles need to remain intact for the laser to effectively target them.

Avoiding sun exposure
Avoid intense sun exposure, including tanning beds, for at least 4 weeks before the treatment. Tanned skin is more prone to irritation and burns during laser treatments.

Avoiding photosensitizing products
Discontinue the use of products that contain photosensitizing ingredients, such as retinol, AHA and BHA acids, and certain herbs (e.g., St. John’s wort), before the procedure.

Proper skin hygiene
On the day of the treatment, the skin should be clean and dry, without the use of creams, lotions, or oils. Do not apply deodorant if the underarms are the target area.

4. Procedure process

During laser hair removal, the laser emits a beam of light that penetrates the skin and destroys the hair follicle. A few days after the treatment, the hairs begin to fall out, and the regrowth becomes progressively thinner and sparser.

The procedure is relatively quick—depending on the area of the body, it may take from a few minutes (e.g., for the upper lip) to about an hour (e.g., for the legs).

5. Post-treatment care

After the treatment, the skin may be slightly red, but irritation typically subsides within a few hours. To promote skin recovery, it is recommended to:

  • Avoid sun exposure – Protect the skin from UV rays for at least 2 weeks after the treatment and use SPF 50 sunscreen.
  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, and intense workouts – For 24-48 hours after the procedure, avoid activities that may irritate the skin.
  • Moisturize the skin – Regularly apply gentle moisturizing creams to support skin regeneration.

6. Treatment frequency

Laser hair removal requires a series of sessions (usually between 6 and 8), performed at intervals of about 5 weeks. This schedule is necessary because the laser is effective only on hairs in the active growth phase (anagen). Hairs in other phases (catagen and telogen) are not visible or susceptible to laser treatment, necessitating multiple sessions.

Our opinion

The first laser hair removal treatment requires proper preparation to ensure safety and effectiveness. The consultation, patch test, and adherence to pre- and post-treatment recommendations minimize the risk of complications and irritation. Regular sessions will help achieve lasting results, including smooth skin and reduced hair growth.
