Can I have cavitation peeling if I have a cold sore (herpes)?

No – an active cold sore (herpes) is an absolute contraindication to cavitation peeling, as well as to any other cosmetic or care treatment on the face. The treatment can only be done once the active phase of herpes has completely healed. To be on the safe side, we recommend waiting at least 7 days after the lesion has disappeared before having your skin cleansed with cavitation peeling.

Why a cold sore rules out cavitation peeling

Herpes is a viral infection, and infections, pus-filled lesions and broken skin are all contraindications to cavitation peeling. During the treatment, the beautician moves an ultrasonic head over the moistened skin of the face. Doing this over an active lesion could transfer the virus – the cold sore could appear in another place or spread across the whole treated area.

In addition, cavitation loosens the bonds between epidermal cells and clears the pores. On healthy skin this has a refreshing effect, but on an active lesion it could increase irritation and slow down healing.

When you can book the treatment

It is a good time to book cavitation peeling when:

• the lesion has fully healed – there are no blisters, scabs or weeping left,
• at least 7 days have passed since it disappeared,
• you have no fever or other signs of an active general infection.

If a cold sore appears just before your appointment, please contact us and reschedule. When planning a series of treatments, remember that a recurrence means a break – you can continue the series only once the lesion has fully healed.

Recurring cold sores and facial treatments

If you get cold sores often, talk to your doctor before planning facial treatments – only a doctor can advise you on the right approach. Please also tell the beautician about your tendency to cold sores during the consultation before the treatment.

Once your skin is healthy, cavitation peeling is a gentle treatment: it does not disrupt the structure of the skin, does not overheat it and can be repeated regularly, also on sensitive and couperose skin. Afterwards your complexion is cleansed, smoother and well hydrated.
