Is your skin very itchy after depilation? Are there red spots, in which there is pus? Have you ever had the impression that depilation has not been performed carefully, because some hair have stuck to the skin and only by using a finger, needle or tweezers (there are as many methods as there are people 🙂 ) they got out? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, it means that you have a problem with ingrown hair after waxing.
People often give up waxing or sugaring because on their skin, several days after the performed treatment, appear the red, itchy spots, professionally known as the follicle inflammation. The occurrence of such symptoms does not have to lead to resigning from sugar, or wax methods of hair removal. You just need to know what steps should be undertaken before and after depilation, in order to protect yourself against the above described skin reactions. The problem of ingrown hair after waxing appears in varying degrees in different people. Sometimes it is so serious that home prevention methods do not give results and it is necessary to begin a therapy, which will eliminate unpleasant itching and unsightly appearance of the skin.
The causes of the occurrence of the phenomenon of ingrown hair after waxing
The main cause of the ingrown hair after waxing is the breaking of the hair – e.g. during depilation, wearing too tight pants, etc. – next to the skin, or sometimes inside the channel, through which the hair should get out to the surface. Such a broken hair is strongly weakened and has no power to break outside. It changes the growth direction, usually inside the follicle. This causes irritation, often also inflammation, which are called the follicle inflammation. It is manifested by red spots appearing within the place of depilation.
When the hair grows very deeply, there may occur purulent conditions. However, most often the hair grows just under the surface of the skin membrane, so it can be easily taken outside. However, we do not recommend the use of needles, tweezers, nails, etc., as these are not too hygienic methods, which may also contribute to the increase of the irritation. It is also important to regularly use the depilation treatment and to have the right length of hair, from 0,5 to 1cm. With longer hair there is greater risk of their breaking. Below there are presented ideas to get rid of this problem.
Home methods of coping with the ingrown hair
The most commonly used preventive measure is to perform regular peeling. The answer to the question which one to choose is simple: any! We have full freedom here. From scrubs performer on our own, e.g.: made of coffee grounds, coffee beans, coarse sea salt, through cosmetics which can be purchased at drugstores or beauty salons, to the mechanical exfoliation. The latter are used in more difficult cases, but we will talk about it in a moment.
If we finally decide on the product selection, we should remember to use it quite regularly, at least twice or three times a week. The skin massaged this way is stimulated, and at the same time the hair follicles get energized, so the hair has more power to break outside, they also do not stop just beneath the epidermis, and even if they do, the exfoliating particles will definitely help them get out.
Scrub is best used in the evening before the planned depilation, as it helps the skin to be smooth after the treatment. After waxing we should wait for 72 hours before we can once again rub away the dead skin.
Another way is the purchase of the softening preparation, which composition contains urea, or the one which contains aspirin, which has the anti-inflammatory effect and soothes oedema. These cosmetics will be discussed at the end of this guide. We can used them 72 hours after depilation, two times a day (in the morning and in the evening), for the maximum of 2 weeks.
More difficult cases of ingrown hair – what to do with them?
An effective way is the mechanical exfoliation therapy. In our salon it is performed using the microdermabrasion equipment. The treatment should be repeated several times, depending on the problem, but for the persistent it can really give great effects and provides peace with the ingrown hair for a long time.
At the beginning, for the uninitiated, we will explain what is the diamond microdermabrasion therapy. Well, most often it is associated with facial treatments, however it can be used for almost every part of the body. It is a non-invasive skin smoothing treatment using sterile diamond cutters, which rub its surface layer. The peeled dirt and dead skin are automatically extracted. The treatment allows to remove exfoliation, bumps, blemishes, wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. It is also important that it improves the “absorption”, and hence, cosmetics, which are used after the treatment more quickly get to the deeper layers of the skin.
In case of ingrown hair after waxing, using the equipment and diamond heads, there are removed dead cells from the surface layer of the epidermis, what enables the hair to more quickly break through the skin. To enhance the effect of the treatment, after wiping the area covered with the problem, you can apply the AHA acids, which have exfoliating and moisturizing effects. Acids also make the skin become thinner, so they additionally allow the hair an easier way out. It often happens that the customers after the first treatment do not completely get rid of the problem. However, we should remember that therapy is a process requiring a series of at least 4-5 treatments. After a few visits the effects will be certainly noticeable.
You have to remember about this
If the hair follicle inflammation takes the pus form, you should not start any treatment with peelings, especially mechanical, as there is the risk that the pus condition will spread to other parts of the skin. In this case, shin should be healed first, supporting the process with, e.g., the zinc ointment, which is the component of Sudocrem. This will dry the pus, reduce the swelling and will heal the spots. Then, you can undertake further steps, which aim at overcoming the ingrown hair.
