I want a therapeutic manicure with nail conditioner, but I have been diagnosed with a fungal nail infection. Can I still have the treatment?

Unfortunately not. A fungal infection is a contraindication to every type of manicure, including a manicure with nail conditioner. If a doctor has diagnosed a fungal infection on your hands or nails, have it treated by a dermatologist first and book the treatment only once your doctor says it is safe.

Why we do not perform a manicure on nails with a fungal infection

During a manicure the nails are filed and the cuticles are worked on – trimmed, pushed back or e-filed. With an active infection, this can irritate the affected nail and skin and help the infection spread to other nails. A fungal infection is contagious, so postponing the treatment also protects other clients of the studio. A conditioner does not treat fungus – its job is to care for a healthy nail plate by protecting it from external factors, strengthening and hardening it. Applied to an infected nail, it could only mask the problem.

Other contraindications to a therapeutic manicure

We also do not perform the treatment if you have:

other nail conditions, including yeast infections, paronychia or onycholysis,
broken skin,
skin warts,
inflammation or an allergic reaction on the skin of your hands.

If you have cancer or low blood clotting, be sure to tell the person doing your treatment beforehand.

What to do if you suspect a fungal infection

Always show worrying changes – such as discolouration, thickening, crumbling of the nail or the nail lifting away from the nail bed – to a doctor or dermatologist. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis and choose the right treatment. Do not hide the changes under polish or conditioner. Follow your doctor’s advice during treatment and do not stop it on your own – nails grow slowly, so the results take patience. Once the treatment is over and your doctor confirms you can return to beauty treatments, a manicure with nail conditioner will help you care for the healthy nail as it grows.

Hygiene matters to us too: all tools are sterilised in a Class B autoclave, and the nail file and buffer are single-use – you can take them home after your visit.
