Facial waxing is a popular and effective method of removing unwanted hair. It makes the skin smooth and the results last for up to several weeks. However, in order to avoid irritation and other side effects, it is helpful to know how to properly prepare for the procedure, perform it safely and take care of your skin after depilation. In this article, you will find tips to help you carry out this treatment at home.

Facial waxing – how to prepare your skin?

Wax removes the hair along with roots, making them grow back slower and softer. It's ideal for people who want to enjoy smooth skin for a longer period of time. However, facial skin is extremely sensitive and requires special care to avoid irritation or damage to the epidermis.

Before starting depilation, it is extremely important to prepare the skin properly. Cleansing your face with a delicate gel or foam will help remove any sebum and impurities (e.g. make-up) that might hinder the wax's ability to work properly. The day before your treatment, it is a good idea to exfoliate gently to remove dead skin and reduce the risk of ingrown hairs. Immediately before depilation, avoid applying greasy creams or oils as they can reduce the adhesion of the wax. If you have never used a wax product before, perform an allergy test on a small patch of skin at least 1 or 2 days before the procedure itself.

For facial depilation, it is best to choose products specifically designed for delicate skin. Soft waxes for larger areas like cheeks, hard waxes (without waxing strips) intended for more delicate areas, such as the upper lip, or pre-made waxing strips are the most commonly recommended options. Use hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested cosmetics to reduce the risk of irritation.

How do I wax my face properly?

Heat the wax to the right temperature, making sure it's not too hot. Apply in the direction of hair growth, making sure to evenly cover the desired areas of your skin. If you are using pre-made strips, warm them up in your hands and stick them on, pressing carefully. Peel the wax off in a quick motion in the opposite direction to hair growth, keeping the skin taut. Once the treatment is complete, remove any remaining wax with cosmetic oil. Try not to apply wax to the same area several times to avoid skin irritation and to minimise the risk of skin abrasion.

Skin care after epilation

After depilation, the skin needs proper care to minimise irritation. Apply a soothing cosmetic such as aloe vera gel, panthenol cream or calendula-based product or a cooling compress if necessary. Avoid sun exposure, saunas, swimming pools and intense workouts for at least 24 hours. Try not to touch the depilated area to prevent infection. In the first few days after depilation, do not use beauty products containing alcohol. Wait at least 3–4 weeks between next hair removal to allow the hair to grow back properly.

When to avoid waxing?

Waxing should not be performed on skin with active acne lesions, cuts or burns. Those using retinoids or other strong exfoliants should consult a cosmetologist before opting for this treatment. Waxing is also not recommended for people with extremely sensitive skin or broken capillaries.

Facial waxing is an effective method of hair removal, but one that requires care and caution. Proper skin preparation, selection of the right products and correct technique will ensure long-lasting results and minimise the risk of irritation. If you have any doubts or do not feel confident, it is advisable to seek the help of a specialist at a beauty salon.
