When Is Labiaplasty Medically Necessary?

Many women consider labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons. However, for some, it is also a medical necessity. Enlarged labia minora or majora can cause various health issues, such as:

  • pain during physical activities, such as walking, cycling, or running,
  • recurrent chafing and irritation,
  • difficulty maintaining proper intimate hygiene,
  • discomfort when wearing tight clothing,
  • pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse,
  • psychological distress related to low self-esteem and embarrassment about the appearance of the intimate area.

If labiaplasty is necessary to improve health and daily functioning, it may be classified as a medical procedure rather than purely cosmetic. In such cases, there is a possibility of obtaining funding from NFZ.

Does NFZ Cover the Cost of Labiaplasty?

In Poland, the National Health Fund generally does not cover cosmetic surgery unless it is deemed medically necessary. Labiaplasty may be covered by NFZ if there are clear medical indications.

Cases where NFZ may approve funding for the procedure include:

  • severe labial hypertrophy causing chronic pain and irritation,
  • congenital abnormalities or improper development of the genital area,
  • complications from childbirth or injuries,
  • deformities resulting from medical conditions or treatments (e.g., cancer treatments, radiation therapy),
  • frequent infections and inflammations caused by labial overgrowth.

The decision to approve funding is made by a doctor and later reviewed by a medical commission, which evaluates whether the procedure is essential for the patient’s health.

What Are the Steps to Obtain Funding?

Applying for NFZ coverage for labiaplasty requires completing several steps:

  1. Consultation with a gynecologist – The patient must visit a doctor who will assess whether the procedure is medically necessary. If so, they will issue a referral for further evaluation.
  2. Consultation with a plastic surgeon or surgical gynecologist – The specialist will further examine the issue and determine if labiaplasty is required to improve the patient’s health.
  3. Submitting an application to NFZ – If the doctors confirm the necessity of the procedure, the patient can submit a request for NFZ funding. This application must include medical documentation and justification for the surgery.
  4. Evaluation by a medical commission – NFZ reviews the application and makes a decision. In some cases, additional medical examinations or specialist opinions may be required.
  5. Undergoing the procedure at an NFZ-affiliated clinic – If the request is approved, the surgery will be performed at a designated facility that has an agreement with NFZ.

The waiting time for a decision and the procedure itself varies depending on the region and the availability of specialists.

Patient Opinions on NFZ-Covered Labiaplasty

Women who have successfully obtained NFZ funding for labiaplasty often emphasize that the process requires patience. Some patients need multiple consultations and medical assessments before their request is approved.

Experiences vary:

  • Positive experiences – Patients who have undergone NFZ-funded labiaplasty often report significant improvements in their quality of life. Many highlight the relief from chronic pain, reduced irritation, and increased confidence.
  • Negative experiences – The main complaints include long waiting times for approval and limited availability of qualified specialists within NFZ-affiliated clinics. Some patients also mention difficulties in obtaining the required medical recommendations.

Our Opinion

Labiaplasty can greatly improve the quality of life for women who experience pain, infections, and other health issues due to labial hypertrophy. In such cases, NFZ coverage should be available for all eligible patients.

However, the approval process can be lengthy and requires persistence. It is essential to be well-informed about NFZ requirements, consult medical professionals, and prepare thorough documentation.

For women who cannot afford a private procedure, NFZ-funded labiaplasty is a valuable option, although unfortunately not always easily accessible.
