What are the contraindications for spray tanning?

Spray tanning is a safe and popular way to achieve an even tan without exposing the skin to harmful UV radiation. However, there are certain contraindications that may prevent or complicate the procedure.

1. Allergies and Skin Sensitivities

  • People allergic to self-tanning ingredients, especially DHA (dihydroxyacetone), may experience allergic reactions such as rashes, redness, itching, or burning sensations.
  • A patch test on a small area of skin is recommended before the first session.

2. Skin Conditions and Open Wounds

  • Spray tanning should not be performed on skin affected by active inflammation, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, acne with open sores, or other dermatological conditions.
  • If the skin has open wounds, cuts, scratches, or sunburns, it is best to wait until they are completely healed.

3. Recent Hair Removal or Shaving

  • Shaving, waxing, or using an epilator right before tanning may cause irritation and uneven color absorption.
  • It is best to perform hair removal at least 24–48 hours before the tanning session.

4. Excessive Sweating and Intense Physical Activity

  • People with excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) may struggle to maintain an even tan, as sweat can cause streaks and patches.
  • It is recommended to avoid intense exercise for at least 24 hours after tanning to prevent smudging.

5. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

  • Spray tanning is considered safe during pregnancy, but there is not enough research on the effects of DHA on a developing fetus.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before undergoing the treatment.
  • If breastfeeding, the nipples should be covered and tanning in that area should be avoided.

6. Asthma and Respiratory Issues

  • During the session, fine mist particles from the tanning solution can be inhaled, which may irritate the airways.
  • People with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other respiratory problems should avoid the treatment or wear a protective mask during application.

7. Recent Cosmetic Treatments

  • Spray tanning should not be done immediately after chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling, or laser treatments, as the skin may be too sensitive.
  • A waiting period of several days to a week is recommended, depending on the procedure.

8. Tendency to Skin Pigmentation and Discoloration

  • People prone to hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone may find that the tan develops unevenly.
  • Consulting a tanning specialist can help determine the best solution and application method.

Easy Waxing recommendation

Spray tanning is a safe procedure, but it is not suitable for everyone. It should be avoided in cases of allergic reactions, active skin conditions, fresh irritation, respiratory problems, or excessive sweating. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before undergoing the treatment. Proper skin preparation will ensure an even, long-lasting tan and minimize the risk of complications.
