Wax depilation is one of the most popular hair removal methods, known for its effectiveness and long-lasting results. However, after the treatment, the skin requires special care, especially if you plan to be exposed to the sun. Many people wonder if it is okay to sunbathe after wax depilation and how this affects the skin. In this article, we will dispel any doubts and explain how to take care of your skin after such a treatment.

Waxing and skin sensitivity

Wax depilation removes hair from the roots, leaving the skin smooth for a longer period of time. However, the treatment causes mechanical irritation of the epidermis, making the skin more sensitive, red and prone to damage. Hair removal can also damage the skin's natural protective barrier, making it more susceptible to UV rays.

Tanning after wax depilation - is it safe?

Immediately after waxing depilation, sunbathing is not recommended. The skin is then particularly delicate and prone to irritation. Sunbathing in this situation can lead to a number of undesirable effects. The body is more susceptible to sunburn after wax depilation, increasing the risk of severe redness and pain even after a short exposure to the sun. In addition, sunbathing with irritated skin can lead to permanent discolouration and increase irritation, itching and inflammation. The same side effects may occur when freshly depilated skin is exposed to the light in a tanning bed.

How long should I avoid the sun after depilation?

After wax depilation, it is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure for a minimum of 24-48 hours, and up to 72 hours for more sensitive skin. During this time, the skin has a chance to regenerate and the irritation will soften. Only after this period can you consider sunbathing, but always with appropriate sun protection - whether by using sunscreen or ensuring appropriate protective clothing.

How do I protect my skin after waxing?

  • Using a cream with UV protection - even a few days after depilation, the skin may be more sensitive, so always apply a cream with a high SPF (minimum 30 and preferably 50).
  • Avoiding prolonged sun exposure - despite using sunscreen, it is a good idea to limit the time you spend in the sun, especially during peak sunlight hours, i.e. between 10am and 4pm.
  • Moisturise your skin - after depilation, your skin needs intensive moisturisation. Using soothing lotions or gels with aloe vera will help keep the skin moisturised and speed up its recovery.
  • Wearing loose clothing - immediately after depilation, it's a good idea to wear loose, airy clothing made from natural fabrics that won't irritate sensitive skin.

With your health in mind...

It is not safe to sunbathe after wax depilation as the skin is irritated and more susceptible to damage after the procedure. Direct exposure to the sun can lead to burns, discolouration and irritation. To protect your skin, it is a good idea to avoid the sun for 24-72 hours after depilation and to use creams with a high UV filter if you plan to spend time outdoors.
