Is men’s foot skin more difficult to treat during a pedicure?
Not because of gender alone. Men’s foot skin is often thicker and more prone to hardening and calluses, but how much work a pedicure takes depends mainly on how well hydrated the skin is – in other words, on daily foot care. Importantly, regular pedicures significantly improve the condition of the skin on the feet in both women and men.
How men’s foot skin is different
A men’s pedicure follows much the same steps as a women’s one. The difference lies in the focus: because men’s skin is usually thicker and builds up hard skin faster, the pedicurist concentrates on filing down calluses and deeply moisturising the feet. Lifestyle plays a part too – long hours in closed shoes, sport or rarely moisturising your feet all make the skin hard and dry. When the feet are cared for regularly, the difference between men’s and women’s skin during the treatment is small.
What really determines the condition of your feet
Most of it comes down to what happens between salon visits. Your feet are easier to keep in good shape if you:
- moisturise them every day with a foot cream, especially the heels,
- wear comfortable, breathable shoes and well-fitting socks,
- do not cut calluses or cuticles yourself,
- book a pedicure regularly – the skin does not have time to harden much, so each treatment is easier.
A pedicure for very hard, calloused feet
Even very neglected feet can be brought back into shape. The standard treatment includes a softening foot bath, a scrub with a gentle massage, removing thickened skin and cuticles with an electric file, shaping and polishing the nails, and moisturising the feet. For very cracked, dry heels and calluses that build up quickly, consider a Callus Peel pedicure with acids – the smooth-feet effect lasts longer than after filing alone.
Please note that athlete’s foot, warts, inflammation or poorly controlled diabetes are contraindications to a cosmetic pedicure – in such cases, consult a doctor, dermatologist or podiatrist.
